Short history of Axminster
Axminster boasts a history that dates back to the Celtic times. It was recorded in the Domesday Book as " Aixeministra" meaning "monastery by the River Axe." Over the centuries, Axminster developed around the Abbey and its church, which was built by the Saxons. The town became famous in the 18th century when Thomas Whitty began manufacturing Axminster carpets, which were renowned worldwide and even laid in some of the most prestigious buildings across the globe. Despite the factory's closure in 1835, the legacy of Axminster carpets continues to this day.
