Slapton Ley is the largest natural freshwater lake in the south west, separated from the sea by a shingle beach. As a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) it was declared a National Nature Reserve (NNR) in 1993. The Nature Reserve is 1.5 miles long and covers over 490 acres of natural woodland, marshes and reedbed habitat, making it a wildlife haven for all types of birds and vegetation.

If you're a keen bird watcher or nature lover, why not incorporate the National Nature Reserve into one of your days out. With such diverse animals, insects and plant life to discover, it's sure to peak your interest in learning all about these habitats. Slapton Ley is a great day out for families, wildlife enthusiasts and anyone with a passion for nature. Enjoy the circular walks on offer throughout the Ley and into Slapton Village as well as spotting the varied local wildlife. As the National Nature Reserve is just opposite the beach, it makes for a lovely break during your beach day out or why not enjoy one of the walks followed by a traditional seaside picnic on Slapton Sands. Be sure to check their website before your visit too as there are often free activities and events happening throughout the year to help you learn and understand more about the environment.

The South West Coast Path also runs alongside the vast, sandy beach from Strete to Torcross, making Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve the perfect place to stop off for a short while during your coastal hike.

The beach and Nature Reserve are open daily with no entrance fees. Parking is available nearby at 3 car parks. For more information about Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve, please visit their website, here you will find further details about the walks, trails and events available to you.
