Standing atop the hills of Dartmoor, St Andrew's Church is a Grade I listed parish church in the Church of England Diocese of Exeter, located in the beautiful town of Moretonhampstead.
Moretonhampstead is situated in the heart of Dartmoor, and is surrounded by beautiful moorland countryside.
Throughout the years, the church has undergone serval restoration projects, but much of it still retains of its original design.
Records show that this beautiful church dates back to the middle ages and was under construction in 1418. The tower is approximately 90 feet (27.5 metres) tall, with a beautiful Medieval staircase turret.
In 1971 a statue of St Andrew was carved in stone and placed in the top one.
Outside, above the entrance, an indecipherable coat of arms is visible, likely that of the Courtenays of Powderham Castle, who for centuries were the non-resident Lords of the Manor and patrons of the living of Moretonhampstead.
The stain-glass windows are a reasonably modern addition, unlikely to date back before the mid-nineteenth century. The present window opposite the south door featuring St Luke is in memory of Dr Glynn Jones, who was a popular doctor in the town for 38 years. It is likely to be the only ecclesiastical glass depicting a football goal and cricket stumps reflecting the doctor's work with the youth of Moreton.
Located next to St Andrew's Church is The Sentery, a beautiful park overlooking Dartmoor and the church with a children's play area and plenty of benches.
